Wedding Party Responsibilities

Your wedding party plays a very important role throughout the wedding planning process and on your wedding day. Your wedding party is typically composed of a few family members and close friends -- people you can rely on to ensure your wedding will be a success. The size of the wedding party is up to you.

The following is a list of the most important duties each wedding party member is responsible for. In addition, there is a list outlining the financial responsibilities for each wedding party member. Please note, these lists are only basic guidelines. You can change or adapt these responsibilities to meet your individual needs and goals for the wedding you wish to have.

  • When engagement announced, notify groom and groom's parents to congratulate them
  • Holds engagement party for bride and groom
  • Prepares guest list for bride
  • If necessary, coordinates all lodging arrangements for brides' out-of-town guests
  • Provides bride and groom with special gift
  • Provides groom with gift
  • Serves as host and hostess of reception
  • Mother helps bride choose her wedding gown
  • Mother selects her own wedding apparel
  • Mother helps bride to keep track of gifts received
  • Mother is last person to be seated at ceremony
  • Mother stores top layer of wedding cake for bridal couple while they are on honeymoon
  • Mother arranges for wedding gown to be dry cleaned and preserved
  • Father coordinates his wedding apparel with other men of the wedding party
  • Father rides to ceremony with bride in limousine
  • Father gives bride away at ceremony
  • When told of engagement, notify bride and bride's parents to congratulate them
  • Hold tea or party to introduce bride to family and friends
  • Prepare guest list for groom
  • If necessary, coordinate all lodging arrangements for groom's out-of-town guests
  • Organize rehearsal dinner (This is one of the most important responsibilities for the groom's parents)
  • Provides bride and groom with a special gift
  • Provide bride with a gift
  • Mother coordinates wedding dress with bride's mother
  • Father gives "toast" to bride at rehearsal dinner
  • Father coordinates wedding apparel with other men in wedding party

Maid of Honor
Helps bride selects attire and address invitation.

  • Plans bridal shower for the bride.
  • Arrives at the dressing site 2 hours before the ceremony to assist the bride in dressing.
  • Arranges the bride's veil and train before the processional and recessional.
  • Holds bride bouquet and the groom's ring if no ring bearer, during the ceremony.
  • Witnesses the signing of the marriage license.
  • Dances with the best man during the bridal party.
  • Helps bride into her going away clothes.
  • Mails wedding announcements after the wedding.
Best Man
Responsible for organizing the usher's activities.
  • Organizes the bachelor party for the groom.
  • Drives groom to the ceremony site and sees that he is properly dressed before the wedding.
  • Bring marriage license to wedding.
  • Pays the clergyman, musicians, photographer, and other service providers the day of the wedding.
  • Holds the bride's ring for the groom, if there is no ring bearer.
  • Witnesses the signing of the marriage license.
  • Drives the newlywed to reception if no driver hired.
  • Offers first toast at the reception, usually before dinner.
  • Dances with the maid of honor during the bridal party.
  • Oversees return of tuxedo rentals for groom and ushers, on time and in good condition.

Bridesmaids
  • Assist maid of honor in planning bridal shower.
  • Assist bride with errands and addressing invitations.
  • Participate in all pre-wedding parties.
  • Arrives at dressing site 2 hours before the wedding.
  • Arrives dressed at the ceremony site 1 hour before the wedding for the photographs.
  • Walk behind ushers in order of height during the processional, either in pairs or in single file.
  • Sit next to usher in the head table.
  • Dance with the usher and other important guest.
  • Encourage single women to participate in bouquet-tossing ceremony.

Ushers
Assist best man with the bachelor's party
  • Arrive dressed in the wedding site 1 hour for photographs.
  • Distribute wedding programs and maps to the reception as guest arrives.
  • Seat guest at the ceremony.

    If it's a female, offer the right arm and if it's a male walk along his left side. If it's a couple, offer right arm to the female; make follows a step or two behind. Seats bride's guest in the left pew and the groom's guest in the right pews.
  • Two ushers may roll the carpet down the aisle.
  • If pew ribbons are used, two ushers may loosen them one row at a time after the ceremony.
  • Direct guest to the reception site.
  • Dance with the bridesmaid and other important guest.

Ring bearer
Ages four and eight.
  • Attends to practice his role.
  • Arrives dressed an hour before the ceremony for photographs.
  • Carries a white pillow with rings attached.
